Resume Fraud

Are your job applicants representing themselves accurately on their resumes?

An article published earlier this year by Fox Business pointed to research that has revealed employee applicants in the millennial and Generation Z age ranges are more likely to lie on their resumes than older applicants. In fact, over 1 in 10 applicants born during that range between the years of 1981 and 2010 admitted to some kind of resume fraud.

How big of an impact could this have on your company? Millennial and Gen Z applicants dominate many emerging fields such as the tech industry, where a recent Team Blind survey about resume deception was conducted. This survey revealed that out of over 10,000 respondents, 1 in 10 in the tech industry embellished or lied on their LinkedIn or resume to land another job. These survey results further support that dishonesty in the form of documentation is becoming commonplace in the information age.

What are these applicants lying about? According to Fox Business, over 1 in 3 resume fabricators admitted to misrepresenting work experience and dates of employment. Nearly half of survey respondents who lied on their resume to an employer admitted that they would continue to lie on their resume, regardless of whether they felt guilt about doing so.

This information should be alarming to employers, as work experience and employment dates are some of the most vital parts of understanding a potential employee’s qualification to work in an open position.

But what is an employer to do when millennial and Gen Z applicants make up the majority of job applicants in the current candidate-oriented job market?

Thankfully, an employment verification from AAA Credit Screening can verify both work experience and employment dates, along with other commonly misrepresented resume items such as a candidate’s former job titles or internship experiences. Other popular fibs on Fox’s list include your employment applicant’s college degree and GPA—discrepancies in these areas can be caught by an education verification. For that reason, both employment and education verifications are an indispensable part of any comprehensive employment background check package.
